Capital Style Magazine

I recently did a photo shoot for Capital Style Magazine. The photos are featured in the current issue, spring 2011. This is my first magazine publication and I am very proud. You can pick up a copy at the Ottawa Home and Garden show (going on now until Sunday at Lansdowne), this weekends Globe and Mail, or at newsstands starting April 1st.

I had the opportunity of photographing Cesare Santaguida's unique home and beautiful restaurant. Cesare is the owner of the Vittoria Trattoria restaurants in Ottawa.

Accepted - Chinatown Remixed 2011

www.alexlukey.com

I am proud to announce that I was accepted into Chinatown Remixed exhibition for 2011! And with good timing too since I finished the last of my photo shoots for the exhibit. Now I just have to edit and finalize the images I plan to use and get them printed. I have already got a couple pictures printed on 24x36 canvas, and let me just say, they look beautiful!

I created this poster for the exhibition by placing glass 1 foot above a Chinatown Remixed poster that I printed out and placed water drops onto it. The drops act as little fisheye lenses and show the image underneath them, but upside down. Since my exhibition will be featuring several images dealing with high-speed photography of liquid, I thought this would be appropriate since it looks like the drops of water are suspended in midair, as if they are falling.

So the final series I shot for Chinatown Remixed, we used sound to trigger the motion. The idea is to place a membrane over a loud speaker like a subwoofer which, when base notes are played, will cause the membrane to vibrate and cause the coloured cream place on it to be propelled into the air. We stretched a black rubber balloon over the end of the subwoofer. This was a messy shoot!

The song I used was Hedley's "321" which was great since it has a countdown into the song and the first note played has a lot of base and is very loud, so it helped me to time pushing the trigger easily.

The result is some really neat abstract sculptures which last 40,000th of a second and it is hard to believe they look like this.

Here is my favourite shot.

Here you can see the initial sound wave traveling through the cream before it blasts it into the air

Coffee Bean There, Done That.

www.alexlukey.com

So I've started a new series that was born from the water drops concept. This series will be several triptychs telling a story of making different kinds of drinks.

The first triptych I decided to shoot, with the help of my lovely assistant/co-brainstormer Kimble, was coffee.

This is probably the biggest project I've taken on so far. I hope to have 4 or 5 different drinks, so essentially I have to shoot 15 different scenes. The final image in each group will have some sort of water/milk drop or splash.

Here are some outtakes of the coffee shots.

Kimble had the great idea of just letting the coffee fly out of the grinder with no lid on. There was a lot of sweeping up in the studio after.
