Every year I like to do a christmas themed shoot.
Last year, as in 2009, I painted myself up all pretty and did a self portrait, which was apart of self-assigned project that myself and a couple friends do now and then to keep us shooting. The original idea came from having wrapping paper as the backdrop and painting the same design on myself to blend in a la that scene from Garden State. I quickly realized that wrapping paper isn't all that simple and there was no way I would be able to recreate the design. So I adapted my idea. After a successful shoot with myself, I shot a couple friends to add to the final look.
This year, or I guess last year... I decided to do a still life photo. I had just purchased a new Nikon 50mm 1.4 lens and was eager to take advantage of the amazing shallow depth of field. A christmas tree served as the perfect backdrop since the tree lights would blur beautifully with the new lens. The week before, I had been experimenting with stop motion photography with water drops, so I wanted to continue with this technique but try something a little more unique rather than photographing water drops. What could I smash and photograph as it was breaking??? Christmas ornaments!! So with that, I took a trip to Walmart and with the help of my friend, we smashed some balls.
Some test shots... Some fell short, some fell flat, and some fell and bounced.
I guess you could read into this shoot as an expression of my teenaged angst, but no.
